Ether 4 – Exercise Faith Muscles

The brother of Jared’s record that Moroni has abridged during his time wandering alone, references great prophesies written by Mahonri of all the Lord showed him, from the beginning of the earth clear to the end. But even when he wrote it, he was commanded to hide it up. The Lord wouldn’t let anyone read it until He came to the Nephites in person. At that time, this record was opened and given to the righteous people of that era. But over the centuries, as unbelief became rampant, this record of the brother of Jared was sealed up by Moroni and hidden again. He says that never were greater words written down than what Mahonri recorded. Moroni tells us when these prophesies will once again be opened to us.

And these things won’t “go forth unto the Gentiles until the day that they shall repent of their iniquity, and become clean before the Lord.” (6)

I’ve always been fascinated by what could be in this sealed portion of the record we don’t yet have. Moroni was clear that we will not have the brother of Jared’s record in full until we repent of our iniquity and become clean before the Lord. What can we do in our lives to prepare ourselves better, so we will be ready to receive these sacred writings?

What small and simple things can we do today to repent and be more clean before the Lord?

Is there something we need to stop doing?

Is there something we need to start doing?

And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are.”

Ether 4:7

When I read this, I know I have a long way to go yet to get to that point of sanctification that God requires of His people as a whole before Mahonri Moriancumr’s prophesies will be revealed to us. Knowing I’m not ready yet doesn’t make me hopeless though. It makes me hopeful.

I believe in repentance. I know I can become sanctified as I work on my faith, exercising my spiritual muscles more each and every day, pushing to be a little better, a little kinder, a little more humble, a little more like my Savior. The small efforts I make to repent and let God change me will bring great and marvelous results in time. I have no doubt these promises of additional revelation and sanctification can happen in my life, if I do not doubt, but keep exercising faith in my Savior Jesus Christ.

To build physical muscles, we must continually challenge the muscles to deal with higher levels of resistance or weight. This process is known as muscle hypertrophy. When the fibers of the muscles sustain damage or injury, the body repairs damaged fibers by fusing them, which increases the mass and size of the muscles.

To build spiritual muscles, we must continually challenge our faith to deal with higher levels of resistance. We must continually repent when we make mistakes or become of aware of misbeliefs we might have held onto all our lives, that have kept us from progressing. We must continually seek to know our Savior more intimately through prayer and studying His words. We must learn to lean on Him, trust Him, when we sustain damage or injury to our spirits through the challenges and trials we face.

What are some ways you can exercise your faith muscles more each day?

Moroni says that “he that believeth these things which I [Christ] have spoken, him will I visit with the manifestations of my Spirit, and he shall know and bear record. For because of my Spirit he shall know that these things are true; for it persuadeth men to do good.” (11)

And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good…I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world.”

Ether 4:12

Light keeps us from getting lost. It keeps us from getting depressed. The lack of light leads to a terrible mental state. Light brings life and joy. Life is essential. Christ is both the light and life of the world. Without Him, we are nothing. He is truth as well. No deceit or subtle trickery. His word will never be broken.

It seems to me that when we exercise our faith to the point where we absolutely know Christ’s words are true—that He is the light, life, and truth that can save us—His Atonement will work miracles in our hearts, even to sanctifying and purifying them, so we are like Him.

Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will show you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief.”

Ether 4:13

We don’t have to have fatalistic attitudes when we see the world slipping into wickedness more and more. We don’t have to believe we are doomed because of the chaotic movement toward darkness our society might embrace.

Moroni proves that even one righteous person can receive all the blessings of God, despite the fallen society of which he belongs. Moroni received revelations, was ministered to by the three Nephites. He saw Christ.

Let us emulate Moroni and exercise our faith in Jesus Christ to repentance, even if we do that alone.

Moroni records Christ’s words, saying to the house of Israel that when “ye shall rend that veil of unbelief which doth cause you to remain in your awful state of wickedness, and hardness of heart, and blindness of mind, then shall the great and marvelous things which have been hid up from the foundation of the world from you—yea, when ye shall call upon the Father in my name [faith], with a broken heart and contrite spirit [repentance], then shall ye know that the Father hath remembered the covenant which he made unto your fathers, O house of Israel.” (15)

Christ repeats His plea to us again, stretching out His hands of mercy to us. Will we listen? Will we come to Him? He has given us the way, and it is by exercising our faith muscles.

Therefore, repent all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me, and believe in my gospel, and be baptized in my name; for he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned; and signs shall follow them that believe in my name.”

Ether 4:18
