2 Nephi 30 – God's people

Nephi reveals that as many of the Gentiles who repent (us) “are the covenant people of the Lord; and as many of the Jews as will not repent shall be cast off; for the Lord covenanteth with none save it be with them that repent and believe in his Son, who is the Holy One of Israel.” (2)

Race, culture, or geographic location is not what saves a people. Though we hear lots about the Jews and Nephites in scripture, anyone in the world (be they Chinese, Indian, Australian, Norwegian, African, etc) can become the covenant people of God if they REPENT and BELIEVE in Jesus Christ.

He is who saves us

Nephi says that the Book of Mormon will be brought to the remnant of his people in a future day and restore them to a knowledge of their Savior…and “then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes.” (6)

Cool visual. I picture someone with cataracts that keep them from seeing the truth. Then God, the great eye surgeon, comes in with the Book of Mormon and does cataract surgery to help them see the glorious truths that were once had among their fathers. Those who believe in Christ shall become “a delightsome people.” (7)

And it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall commence his work among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth.”

2 Nephi 30:8

This is why we do missionary work. God’s people doesn’t mean a certain race or nation; it means ANY who will repent and believe God’s words. Those are His people, and we, as members of His church, are charged to find and restore them to the truth.

This gathering of God’s people will “cause a great division among the people, and the wicked will he destroy; and he will spare his people, yea, even if it so be that he must destroy the wicked by fire.” (10)

This great division will be because of God’s words.

The wicked who reject His words will become more wicked, and the righteous who embrace His words will become more righteous.

No middle ground.

What side will we be on?

This will usher in the millennial reign of Jesus Christ.

And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

2 Nephi 30:11
  • Loins signifies strength. Righteousness gives us strength.
  • Reins symbolize control. Faith in Christ gives us control over our lives.

During Christ’s reign, “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” (15)

Knowing God tempers one’s spirit so they don’t want to hurt or destroy anything or anyone. Love fills our heart the more we come to know our Savior. That can be an indicator of our spiritual knowledge—how we treat others.

Could I be kinder? Less judgmental? More empathetic?

In the millennial reign, we will receive all scripture that has been sealed or hidden up by the Lord. In the last post, Nephi talked about how God has His people make records wherever they are. Having all His words gathered in one is something to look forward to.

Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed; and Satan shall have power over the hearts of the children of men no more, for a long time.

2 Nephi 30:18

Satan’s power is diminished or nullified when people treasure God’s words. The words of God are powerful. Am I feasting upon them as I should? Could I do better?
