I am a Child of God

One of my favorite church songs that the children traditionally sing is “I AM A CHILD OF GOD.”

It’s beautiful and the words are simple, yet profound.

Whenever my grandson is visiting, we have certain bedtime rituals we always follow in order to help prepare him for bed. One of them is that I sing I AM A CHILD OF GOD  to him. Now, I can’t sing at all, but it doesn’t matter, he loves it and has come to expect it. He now sings it with me, but long before he could sing the words, I had a thought provoking experience.

One morning as I lay in bed, I watched him play in his crib on the video monitor. (Best invention ever! Seriously, how did I ever raise my children without one?) He was awake, quietly playing and humming to himself. Suddenly, he belted out the words, “HELP ME FIND THE WAY.” This is a line from one of the verses of I AM A CHILD OF GOD.

This was the first time he’d ever sung any of the words from the song. The fact that he chose to sing that particular line for the first time EVER was not lost on me. The meaning hit me with such force.

I needed to help him find his way in this life. In fact, we all need to help our children and grandchildren find their way in this life.

In Moses 1:39 it reads:

For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

God’s work and glory is US. We are His most important work.

Perhaps this tells us where our work and glory is as well. This tells us what our most important work is while here on this earth.

Knowing this and always remembering it can keep us focused on the things that really matter in this life.

Below is a video of the song I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Enjoy!
